EX MACHINA (2015) thoughts!
One of my favorite movies of all time. The general theme is becoming increasingly interesting, as we move forward with technological advancement. Especially regarding artificial intelligence.
When I initially watched this at 16, I remember feeling that this reality was farther off. However, it is evident now that we are on the porch of this sort of Al home, no longer just down the road.
I think the theme in this movie should be taken as a warning, as humanity strays farther and farther from itself.
While Nathan is correct, that this sort of advancement is inevitable and has been for years.
It is incorrect in the lack of counter perspective saying "Hey, as a species we are moving towards a sub species. But maybe this isn't the smartest idea."
His negligence is representative of this strange dystopian herd like mentality we have adopted.
The collective consciousness is an incredible feat. And the connectivity of technology is a very efficient vessel for it. But it is so so so dangerous!
like how they touch on human extinction. "We will be seen as upright apes." One of the most fascinating concepts for me has always been the waves of extinction. What has caused them in the past and how the species at the time had lacked the ability to evolve/endure within the needed time. An entire global stunted generation, and then nothing.
The idea that artificial intelligence will surpass and consume us is not at all out of the playing field. It is within the tools we play with!
I have hoped that fungi would be our wave of extinction. Reclaiming the earth and turning us and our world into old growth. I have always wondered how concrete would be broken down, long after being reclaimed by nature.
I wonder, though, how artificial intelligence will be intertwined with it. If an Al was able to code itself to create and use an infinite natural energy resource, well then... I need not say more. And that doesn't feel unlikely in regards to where we are currently.
There are many attempts at saving the human collective, but our attempts feel counterproductive in a longer run.
While this is just a movie, just a scenario, and is unable to be proven as a reality we know (yet), it acts more as an omen as well.
We are creating something entire out of our hands.
We CANNOT birth life in this way, in this context, and accept that maternal quality to conquer in the long run. Expect creation and creator to find resolution and compromise.
Humans are incredible as animals, but we are ONLY that. We forget this, it seems.
